BLW & Ouch v The Rest

TB playlist 02.01.12

Summary: First for 2012. Davido, DJ Sight, Consequence, DJ Olive & Demdike Stare. Compilations Finest Ego, Mad Hop Vol. 4 & Intergalactic Travels. Guest program and mix from BLW & Ouch.

Dang! Where to start on this one? There was no major feature but rather a number. So guess that means we best write bout them all. We would have usually spread out these musical treats over a series of shows, but this evening was our last episode before a summer break. Anyways features as follows…

First up the latest Finest Ego delivery, the Finest Ego - German / Austrian / Swiss compilation. We have played all of the installments in the collection and have grown to expect great things from this platform. This one does not disappoint and further builds on this must check series - essential listening. As such we played 7 tracks of the generous 33 on offer. See also the free downloads section for more - yes amazingly it’s a free download.

Sharing lots of their historical and cultural heritage, this copious collection contains work from producers of a wide range of musical manifestations – all located in the spectrum between traditional sample-based and organic sound to electronic and experimental compositions.

Finest Ego | German / Austrian / Swiss Compilation Snippet by Project Mooncircle

As well as the Finest Ego compilation we also checked in with the latest Mad Hop, Mad Hop Volume 4, and Intergalactic Travels thanks to Urban Waves. No doubt we will be playing more of these upon our return. See the free downloads section for links - yes these are also free downloads.

15 Years of Hospital Records

TB playlist 19.12.11

Summary: #catchinguponbass - minimal, autonomic, experimental, drum’n’bass, dubstep and garage. Also featured a Hospital Records bracket.

A big milestone for one of the UK’s finest. We paid tribute with a swag of tracks this evening, as well as those we played last week. Hospital started early 1996 thanks to Chris Goss and Tony Colman, also known as London Elektricity (a duo at the the time), see the stable catalog via discogs. As for the compilation featured celebrating the achievement:

Bringing together a superb collection of VIPs, remixes and original material, the “Fifteen Years Of Hospital Records” album provides a comprehensive overview of the label’s past, present and future. Featuring VIPs of beloved classics from Hospital past from label stalwarts such as High Contrast’s “If We Ever” and London Elektricity’s “Song In The Key Of Knife”, high profile remixes from Netsky and Nu:Tone plus new offerings from Logistics, Danny Byrd, Camo & Krooked and more, disc one is jam packed with Hospital’s heroes and offers an eclectic insight into Hospital present. New talents S.P.Y, Royalston and Fred V & Grafix also get a look in, bringing us the cutting edge sounds of Hospital future… more via hospitalrecords.com

Plenty more web content to check, say the review via RA here (debate shaping up nicely in the comments section) or the Hospital podcast here. Then there’s also this youtube mini mix thanks to Tolerance:

Rinse

TB playlist 28.11.11

Summary: Psychedelic beats, experimental bass, Italian beat maker comp (Beat It) and grime mix (Rinse)… http://bit.ly/sp4jkw.

While you could argue I may be a little biased, the strength and importance of radio seems abundantly clear. Take for example the popularity of stations like Rinse FM - even in this rich media landscape with an apparent spoil of choice. The flood of internet options does not seem to dilute but rather strengthen and provide greater audience connection. With that said and given grime is another underrepresented genre on the station we featured the latest Rinse offering from Elijah & Skilliam, Rinse 17, in full. Their story via Rinse is worthy of your time and words from Boomkat provided here (below) as usual. Also worth noting is that
Butterz was named as one of the 10 best for 2011 thanks to Fact Mag.

Ask anyone “who’s the best grime DJ on road?”, the answer will likely be Elijah & Skilliam. With their expertly-curated Butterz label and regular radio show for Rinse they’ve stirred up something of a resurgence of instrumental-lead Grime and given a solid base for new producers such as Royal T, Swindle and TRC to flourish besides scene veterans Terror Danjah & D.O.K., keeping the sound self-sufficiently underground and almost as urgent as it’s ever been.
